Cowboy Will-writers 'may be widespread'
Another study has highlighted the importance of using properly-qualified Will-writers for estate planning.

The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (Step) told the Law Society Gazette two-thirds of its members had seen 'incompetence or dishonesty' within the industry in the past 12 months.

This included 63 per cent who had witnessed Will-writing companies going bust and disappearing with thousands of pounds of clients' money.

Furthermore, some respondents said they had encountered firms using pressure tactics such as approaching people in shopping precincts and warning them their children may be taken into care if they do not have a Will.

Step spokesperson David Harvey warned: 'This research shows how widespread cowboy Will-writers have become.'

Yesterday (August 10th 2010), BBC News reported on a similar investigation by Panorama, which found many fraudulent Will-writing companies practising in the UK, including some which had stolen payments to beneficiaries and others which lost important documents.

Its report said it is essential to use accredited solicitors when looking to have a Will drawn up.ADNFCR-2347-ID-800020826-ADNFCR
