Granting power of attorney 'must be a priority'
Consumers have been reminded that arranging power of attorney as soon as possible should be considered a top priority in their future financial planning.

A new report from NHS Highland has advised people that contacting a solicitor to arrange power of attorney can help them avoid losing control over their own circumstances if they become unable to make their own decisions.

The body stated that the process is not only relevant for those writing Wills, as mental illness or admission to care can also mean that family members will need to manage the affected person's estate on their behalf.

However, NHS Highland's consultant physician in medicine for the elderly Martin Wilson warned that this right is not granted automatically, which could leave the person's affairs in legal limbo.

The health authority therefore called for consumers to take legal advice on the matter, which will ensure the process of granting power of attorney is completed without any errors.

This follows advice from the Equity Release Solicitors' Alliance earlier this month, which recommended that older consumers arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney to make sure their financial affairs are cared for in all circumstances.ADNFCR-2347-ID-19480796-ADNFCR
