Following a review, the Government said last Friday that patients fitted with French Poly Implant Prostheses (PiP) implants on the NHS for breast reconstruction would have them replaced, with the NHS covering the cost. Those treated on the NHS will have been cancer patients undergoing reconstructive surgery.
In cases where private healthcare providers were not planning on providing the same service to their patients, the Health Secretary has said that the NHS will pay for the implants to be removed.
It is thought that some 40,000 British women have had the implants, which were banned in France in 2010.
