Mother launches clinical negligence claim following son's death

Date: 31 October 2011

A clinical negligence case has been launched by a mother whose son died as a result of medical mistakes.

Lucas Wellsted was found dead on his bedroom floor only a few hours after he had been sent home from hospital, reports the Weston Mercury.

His mother Sian Eggins is now pursuing clinical negligence compensation after it was revealed that basic tests were not carried out by Dr Philip Smith and nurses at the Seashore Centre at Weston General Hospital. Lucas had been showing signs of meningitis and an inquest found he died of natural causes - septicaemia and pneumonia - as a result of neglect from hospital staff.

"Being told that something as simple as antibiotics could have saved Lucas is just gut wrenching," said Ms Eggins, who added that she hopes her clinical negligence fight will ensure the same mistake does not happen again.

Laura May, a 17-year-old from Chorley, recently won a seven-figure clinical negligence settlement after errors resulted in her being left paralysed for life, the Chorley Guardian reported.
