Residents seek compensation for illnesses caused by fire

A council is being sued for compensation by residents in Thurrock who say they have become ill as a result of a fire at a nearby recycling plant.

The group, who live in and around Grovesnor Road, say no health and safety warnings were given out by Thurrock Council when the Rio recycling site in Stanford Road was alight, reports the Thurrock Gazette.

Maureen McPherson, 62, said: "I am angry because since the fire started it has left me feeling so ill.

"It has created so many problems and it has been really difficult."

She added she has received no advice from the council and says she feels let down after having to spend four days in hospital recovering from blood poisoning and breathing difficulties.

The blaze at the Rio recycling plant burned for a total of five weeks, due to the difficulties fire crews had in bringing the flames under control at the scene.
