A man has been awarded personal injury compensation after a paper manufacturer admitted majority liability for injuries he sustained on the job.

Factory worker Wayne Miller had his hand crushed as he attempted to fix a paper roller on the premises of Burneside paper manufacturer James Cropper.

The 48-year-old's sleeve was caught in the device and his arm was pulled into the machinery.

"My hand swelled up like a boxing glove and turned green and was burned and bloody," he said.

James Cropper was ordered to pay the Kendal resident £300,000 in damages.

Mr Miller's original claim for £375,000 was reduced as he had been working alone and had taken off a guard to get inside the machine.

The Westmorland Gazette reports how he was forced to leave the manual job as he was left with crushed nerves and no grip in his left arm.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, paper manufacturing has traditionally been a sector that has seen a high number of accidents among workers.
