Multi-million pound payout approved for cycle accident victim

The victim of a devastating road accident has been awarded a multi-million pound sum in personal injury compensation.

Hamish McCullough, now 34, had been riding his bike near Wantage when the accident occurred in 2001, the Oxford Mail reports.

He was knocked to the ground by a car and sustained severe brain damage as a result of his head injuries.

The victim now needs 24-hour care and will never be able to live independently.

Legal action was taken on his behalf against the insurer of the motorist and a payout has now been approved at the High Court.

Mr McCullough will receive a lump sum of £2.5 million, as well as annual, index-linked payouts for the rest of his life to cover his long-term care needs.

More than 16,000 cyclists are killed or injured on Britain's roads every year, according to statistics from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
