A £15,000 clinical negligence payout has been awarded to a widow after her husband died due to drug-related mistakes in hospital.
Pensioner Albert Matthews had been struggling with shortness of breath and was taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford in September 2006, BBC News reports.
He was diagnosed with pneumonia and given Tramadol and Haloperidol, but a few days later, staff administered Lorazepam.
This is despite the fact that the three drugs are known to cause breathing problems and should not be given together.
Mr Matthews went into cardiac arrest and died the day after he was given the Lorazepam.
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust has now admitted the correct checks were not made before the patient's treatment and has agreed to a clinical negligence settlement of £15,000.
"We sincerely hope that lessons have been learnt from this and that this never happens again," said Mr Matthews' widow Mary Morris.
Anyone affected by clinical negligence may wish to seek advice from Kester Cunningham John, which has been rated the top claimant injury firm in East Anglia for over ten years.
