Seven-figure payout for man injured in moped crash

A man who was left unable to care for himself after being involved in a road traffic accident is to receive £1.45 million in personal injury compensation.

Keith Barker-Platt, 59, had been riding his moped in Eltham in May 2005 when he was hit by a car, according to reports in the Bromley Times.

The victim was thrown from his vehicle and sustained serious head injuries which resulted in irreversible brain damage.

Mr Barker-Platt now has physical and cognitive problems which have left him reliant on the care of his wife.

After taking legal action against the unnamed motorist, the victim has now been awarded the seven-figure sum in compensation to cover his long-term care needs.

In cases where claimants have been the victims of brain damage, compensation payouts are usually much larger than for other injuries in order to cover care for the rest of the affected person's life.

The money will come from the insurer of the person held responsible, or from the Motor Insurers' Bureau.
