MoD reveals compensation may not be ready until 2012 |
Ex-servicemen injured while serving in warzones have criticised the Ministry of Defence (MoD) after news that they may not receive their compensation for another two years.
In February, the Labour government assured the 9,000 most badly-injured troops that they would receive their share of a £1.5 million funding package and that this would be backdated to include all personnel injured in action since April 2005.
However, a memo from the MoD has now suggested that the money will not be ready until at least 2012.
Carl Clowes, 24, lost a leg serving in Afghanistan and said he is disappointed with the news, as it means he may not be able to pay for physiotherapy and special adaptations to his home.
"It's hugely frustrating. I was told I'd get the extra compensation by October - now I'm having to wait," he told the press.
The MoD has increasingly come under fire lately for its Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, which critics say does not go far enough to improve the livelihoods of those hurt while serving their country.
