Another Winter of Discontent? Comparisons with 1979 seem to be commonplace at the moment. The government cuts of Jim Callaghan's administration led to the wave of strikes and some famous pictures of 12 foot high rubbish piles in Leicester Square (which I can remember along with some fairly significant rats wandering throughout them) as the Bin-men continued their action.
Well we certainly haven't reached that level yet although Mr Bob Crow of the RMT, has been doing his best to disrupt the UK transport system. However, perception is all and although the French have a far higher level of industrial action, which has not been so obviously concentrated on one city, they nearly stopped the entire nation with the fuel supply blockages the other week.
Unfortunately our levels of industrial action seem to be very focused on London and the South East and get a far broader range of international attention than is probably justified. As one US businessman mentioned to me the other day |
