Cambridge University Rugby League Club have published their fixtures for the 2009/10 season, with it culminating in the annual varsity match which takes place in March at the Stoop, Twickenham.
The 2009/10 fixture list sees Cambridge travelling further north with two games in Sheffield. The midlands division sees the exit of Staffordshire University and Loughborough B, and the entry of Sheffield University, Sheffield Hallam University and Coventry University makes the division more competitive than ever.
Coach John Evans sees the division as being one of the most competitive in his time at the club; "We were proud to win the division last year against some tough teams and this year sees it being ramped up even further with the entry of the two Sheffield teams and Coventry who were tough competitors when we played them in the BUCS Trophy. This is great for our players as they have to be on top form for every fixture this year and it means we will need a bigger squad than last year to cope with the intensity". With the division now only comprising of 7 teams, the 8 games per club is short of the usual 10 BUCS fixtures the club has experienced in previous years. The club have therefore responded quickly with home and away fixtures against Durham University to fill the fixture card. Mr Evans explains; "Game time is the important thing for players new to the sport and we have made sure that we get a hit out against Durham in October and also in December were there are gaps in the fixture list. After the weather problems we had after Christmas last season we need to make sure game time is frontloaded before the break."
The club are planning an intensive pre season in Cambridge in the autumn with the strong possibility of a friendly fixture against a Super 8 side which is still to be confirmed.
