Couples 'should have cooling off period' before divorce |
Married couples who want to part company should only start divorce proceedings after a three-month cooling off period.
This is the view of a Conservative thinktank Centre for Social Justice, which said it wants to stop people rushing into getting divorced.
It has therefore suggested that couples going through marital difficulties should be legally required to spend three months undergoing counselling and looking at whether a reconciliation is possible.
Iain Duncan Smith, who heads the thinktank, commented: "It's ironic really, given the nature of family breakdown around them, they have this incredibly high expectation of it."
Speaking to BBC News, he added that the idea of compromise between men and women "seems to have disappeared".
The report also suggested that couples who are preparing to tie the knot take marriage classes to identify potential sources of conflict and how they can best be managed.
This comes shortly after research by accountancy firm Grant Thornton found that a large number of divorce lawyers across the country believe the recession could lead to fewer couples choosing to separate.
