Recession tipped to hit divorce rate |
The divorce rate in the UK could be set to drop as a result of the flagging economy, a new study has predicted.
Research by accountancy firm Grant Thornton found that a large number of divorce lawyers across the country believe the recession could lead to fewer couples choosing to separate.
This was said to be due to issues such as falling property values, as the proceeds of a house sale would not be enough to sustain each partner individually.
Robert Kerr, a partner at Grant Thornton, commented: "The financial carve-up that follows a divorce settlement will be at the forefront of a couple's mind."
However, he added that during times of economic hardship, relationships are put under a lot of additional strain.
This comes after figures from Aviva showed that pre-nuptial agreements have quadrupled in popularity during the last six years.
The study also showed that more than half of divorcing couples would like to see divorce laws amended to provide them with greater protection.
