Divorce 'easier than getting a driving licence' |
It is becoming increasingly easy for couples in the UK to get a divorce, it has been stated.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Family Division judge Sir Paul Coleridge claimed that in a sense, legally separating from a partner has become "easier than getting a driving licence".
He described it as a "form-filling exercise" that can be completed within six weeks if all parties agree on the terms.
Sir Paul suggested a change in attitudes and greater freedom of choice when it comes to sexual morality and having children out of wedlock is to blame for the increase in divorces.
"It affects the lives of children themselves, it affects the lives of their parents ... the wider family gets caught up in it," he continued.
The expert noted that even the royal family is not immune from the effects of divorce.
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, 67 per cent of divorces in 2009 were granted to the female in a marriage, with behaviour being the most common reason for dissolutions given to an individual.
