Judge calls for divorce law reform |
A senior judge has called on the government to make reforming divorce law in England and Wales a priority, as he claimed it is decades out of date.
Mr Justice Coleridge, who sits in the family division of the High Court, stated that politicians have avoided making potentially contentious legislation and left judges to establish laws on issues such as pre-nuptial agreements and cohabitations via the back door.
He described the fact that there has been no review of divorce laws since 1950 as "incredible and concerning" considering how much society has changed over the past 60 years, the Daily Telegraph stated.
"When the last major reform was introduced there was no such thing as cohabitation outside marriage," he said in a speech given to charity Care, adding the current law is "a dead parrot" and "no longer fit for purpose".
Recently, it was suggested by the Daily Mail that one high-profile couple who opted not to sign a pre-nup was the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as royal sources told the newspaper that there has been no such agreement.
