New figures show divorce rates in England and Wales |
Divorce rates in England and Wales have fallen to a 32-year low in England and Wales, recent figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed. The number of people requiring a family law solicitor dropped to 10.5 per 1,000 married couples in 2009, down from 11.2 the year before. This represents a decline of 6.3 per cent year-on-year and is the lowest level since 1977 when there were only 10.3 divorcing couples per 1,000 couples. According to the recent figures, one in five of the men and women who divorced in 2009 had done so previously, which is double the proportion seen in 1980. In 67 per cent of the cases in 2009, the wife was granted the divorce and in seven out of ten instances, the marriage was the first for both parties. Actors Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds recently displayed the fact that they seem to be divorcing amicably, having recently met up in Los Angeles to discuss the proceedings face to face.
