Ex-wife of oil tycoon is awarded bigger divorce settlement |
The ex-wife of an oil tycoon has succeeded in her case to have her divorce payout increased after she argued that he had kept assets from her during the split.
Gareth Jones - who made his fortune in the Scottish fossil fuels industry - married Victoria in 1986 and Mrs Jones was awarded £5 million when they separated in 2006.
However, she claimed that the payout was too low because it represented less than a quarter of the marital assets.
It was alleged that Mr Jones had sold a multi-million pound business prior to the divorce and had failed to disclose the information.
At the Court of Appeal this week, three top family law judges agreed that Mrs Jones should have been entitled to half of the assets generated during the marriage - which totalled £16 million - and she will now receive a larger settlement of £8 million.
Lord Justice Wilson criticised Mr Jones for having "dishonestly suppressed the existence of the negotiations" regarding the sale of his business.
