Gold bars revealed to be at centre of divorce battle
A wife in a divorce case has claimed that her ex-husband has taken gold bars from the family home worth £62,000.

Christina Brandon stated that her husband took the three bars from the 11-bedroom mansion the couple shared on the day he left the family.

However, lawyers for Peter Brandon insist that the bars had been lying around the house for years and could have been taken at any time.

He also denies the allegations of his wife and mother of his six children that they are part of a secret fund which was not declared following their separation.

Mr Brandon is seeking to appeal against the divorce ruling made earlier this year, stating that it has over-funded his former wife's lifestyle.

Another separation case involving debate over assets involved Marks & Spencer chairman Sir Stuart Rose, who the Daily Mail recently reported had sold £400,000 of stocks in the company to pay for the divorce.

Neale Grearson, a family law partner at KCJ, says: "Allegations regarding gold bars are a little unusual but during a divorce there are often arguments over identifying the assets before they can be divided.

"There is a requirement for full and open disclosure of finances and most people are entirely honest about this. There are though occasions when assets are hidden or attempts made to siphon away monies to avoid the claims of a spouse. In those cases it is often necessary to involve a forensic accountant or other expert to track down assets."
