'Have all your information ready' when having meetings about pre-nups |
People who are thinking of getting a pre-nuptial agreement should ensure they have all the information they need before seeking the advice of family law solicitors.
This is according to Karen Ritchie, an independent financial adviser who told the Independent this will ensure the expert is able to draw up a document that is as accurate as possible.
She pointed out that being fully aware of each other's finances will prevent cases similar to that recently seen in the Supreme Court, in which Nicolas Granatino attempted to challenge a pre-nup after finding that his estranged wife Katrin Radmacher had more assets than he realised.
His case was thrown out, suggesting that more weight could be given to pre-nups in UK courts in future.
"So make sure you gather together every detail of your financial position," Ms Ritchie advised.
She explained this should include current earnings, savings, investments and mortgages, as well as other potential assets such as inheritances and trust funds.
