Couples with daughters 'are more likely to divorce' |
A new study from the US has found that couples who have daughters are more likely to divorce than those who have sons.
Scientists and psychologists at the University of California in San Diego and Berkeley found that not only were married couples with sons more likely to stay married, but unmarried couples who found they were expecting a boy also had a greater chance of getting married.
Furthermore, when couples had as many as three daughters with a girl born first, they were ten per cent more likely to get a divorce than parents of boys.
It was suggested that daughters may provide the social support that mothers need to end a bad marriage.
Alternatively, Denver psychologist Susan Heitler said women may be unwilling to stay in a bad relationship because they don't want to suggest it is an acceptable form of marriage to their daughters.
Last month, Lord Justice Wall urged couples to make their divorce as amicable as possible in order to avoid damaging the wellbeing of their children, the Daily Mail reported.
