Couples who own property together should seek the advice of a family law solicitor if they intend to divorce.
Legal advisor Brian D Kasche said qualified lawyers will be able to provide both parties with information regarding how best to resolve mortgage and possession issues.
He said couples will usually have to choose between selling the house, transferring it over to one name only or refinancing, but warned that not every option will suit each individual.
“It is best to talk to your divorce lawyer before you make any financial transactions or decisions about what to do with jointly-owned property,” Mr Kasche commented.
This follows recent advice from DivorceAid.co.uk founder Christina Tait, who said seeking the counsel of an experienced and professional divorce lawyer should help to make the process as problem-free as possible.
She pointed out this could also prevent the need for a court appearance during the separation process.
