Recession sees more cohabiting couples seeking legal advice |
The number of cohabiting couples looking for legal advice increased rapidly during the recession, according to reports. It has been suggested that one of the causes of the increase is the number of relationships that have been breaking down under the stress of financial hardship and redundancy. Legal expert Vanessa Lloyd Platt told the Law Gazette one problem that can arise from a broken relationship is when one partner owns the property in which they both live. She added that the system disadvantages women who may have given up work to raise children and called on the rules to be brought into line with those that apply to couples who are married or in a civil partnership. Unmarried partners currently do not have the same legal rights as married couples, meaning that if they split up, the partner has no power to remain in a property in the other person's name or to any inheritance if they pass away.
