According to reports in New York newspaper the Journal News, the nephew of president John F Kennedy filed the divorce

The couple have four children together and have been married for 16 years.

Mr Kennedy refused to discuss the matter, telling the publication it is part of his 'personal life'.

No reports have yet been confirmed that Ms Kennedy is being treated for problems with alcohol, as rumours in the press have suggested.

Mr Kennedy is a prominent environmentalist and has most recently been involved in the repercussions of the BP oil spill.
