Divorce 'is rising among the over-60s' |
Although divorce rates may be falling in the UK as a whole, they are increasing among over-60s.
The Times cites figures from the Office for National Statistics, which show that 50 per cent more over-60s are now getting divorced than was the case ten years ago.
This was attributed to changing lifestyles in the UK, with experts pointing out in the publication that older people are no longer willing to accept the same standards as they would have done as youngsters.
Christine Northam, a counsellor with Relate, pointed out that women are no longer expected to stay in an unhappy marriage for the sake of the children, so are instead able to look for self-fulfillment alone.
"It is a trend of significance and I think that it has something to do with the changing role of women," she added.
Furthermore, life expectancies are now much longer, which is likely to be contributing to the trend, the Times suggested.
Over-60s may find it more important than most to seek a specialist family lawyer for a divorce, as they are likely to have many more assets.
Independent advisory portal DivorceAid.co.uk points out that problems with dividing them up could drastically lengthen the divorce process.
