Seeking the advice of a specialist divorce lawyer could help couples to avoid the pitfalls that may befall those separating later in life.

Commenting on recent figures from the Office for National Statistics which showed that divorce among the over-50s has increased by 19 per cent since 1998, Christina Tait of advisory website DivorceAid.co.uk told the Express that independent, expert advice is vital.

She pointed out that older couples could have pensions that are worth more than their house, plus they could have investments and separate bank accounts which will need to be addressed.

"Divorce is easy but it's finances that take the work," Ms Tait said, adding that couples should keep on top of their financial affairs at all times in case of divorce.
