Legal advice 'is essential for a smooth divorce process'
Couples going through a separation have been reminded of the importance of consulting solicitors in order to avoid any potential delays.

A new survey of lawyers conducted by Unbiased.co.uk has revealed that an increasing number of divorcing partners in the UK are putting off taking advice or reaching a final settlement because of the uncertain worth of their assets.

The consumer advice website stated that this is due to the effects of the recession, which is leading many people to delay taking major financial decisions.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk, warned against this attitude and reminded couples that taking professional advice is "always the best step" to concluding legal proceedings smoothly.

She said: "A family solicitor will help you through the divorce process and ensure you get everything you are entitled to from the final settlement."

The Law Society has previously advised that this is particularly applicable to older people, as the divorce process can often be more complicated and stressful for those who have been married for a long time.ADNFCR-2347-ID-19539765-ADNFCR
