Straight couple call for family law change over civil unions |
A couple are to launch a legal challenge to UK family law in order to allow heterosexual couples to form civil partnerships.
Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle have stated their intention to take their case to the European Court of Human Rights after their application to form a civil partnership was rejected by Islington Town Hall.
The couple had hoped to enter this partnership out of a desire to avoid marriage, an institution which they believe to be discriminatory against homosexuals.
Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has voiced his support for Mr Freeman and Ms Doyle's legal campaign, agreeing that current family law governing civil partnerships is discriminatory.
Ms Doyle said: "We want a choice and all other couples should also have a choice, irrespective of their sexuality."
Earlier this month, a registrar for Islington Council took her employer to the Court of Appeal after alleging that she had been illegally discriminated against for refusing to conduct same-sex civil partnerships.
