The Practicalities of Coming to Terms with Divorce
According to an article in today's media, the average divorcee takes almost 18 months to get over the breakdown of their marriage. This fact comes as no surprise to KCJ family solicitor Elisabeth Sneade. She comments: "For many people divorce is very similar to bereavement and they go through a prolonged 'grieving' process. Our role is to try to ensure that during this period they get all the legal support and advice they need, not just about what is happening to them at the moment but its impact on their future. So, for instance, although people know they have to deal with the financial aspects of the divorce itself, we often have to work quite hard to ensure that they then take other necessary steps such as making a new Will which doesn't include their former spouse. They may not feel they are emotionally ready to do this until several months after the divorce has been finalised, while we know that delaying could potentially cause serious financial issues if anything were to happen to them in the meantime".
