Pre-nuptial agreements 'can make divorce easier' |
Couples have been advised that signing a pre-nuptial agreement can make the legal process easier should they later decide to divorce.
BPP Law School has reported an increase in demand for such arrangements in the last few years as people look to take precautions to protect their future financial security.
Alison Wells, director of the Legal Practice Course programmes for the school, suggested that signing a pre-nup can allow for a divorce process that is more cost-effective and less fractious than it otherwise might have been.
The increasing legal emphasis placed upon the documents should also be considered, with German heiress Katrin Radmacher having recently won a High Court ruling to have the conditions of her pre-nuptial agreement legally enforced.
Ms Wells stated that making pre-nuptial arrangements should therefore be considered as a means for couples to protect their interests during the recession.
She said: "The current economic climate could add to the recent rise in enquiries about pre-nups as
[people are] more aware of what they stand to lose if they go through a divorce in the UK."
