Divorce settlements 'should be reassessed during recession' |
Couples going through a separation have been advised to reassess their divorce settlements because of changing economic conditions.
New research from professional advice portal Unbiased.co.uk suggested that divorcees re-evaluate their previously arranged settlements due to the decreasing values of certain items during the recession.
These include key assets such as property, which will have been hit by falling house prices, while people are also advised to revise estimates on the value of their pension savings and long-term investments.
David Elms, chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk, called on those concerned to discuss such matters with their solicitors in order to ensure they are receiving a fair and realistic settlement.
He said: "It is vital to seek professional advice to ensure you and your assets are protected."
This comes after the Guardian last week outlined the potentially useful role played by pre-nuptial agreements in protecting the finances of couples during the economic downturn.
