Cleese brands divorce settlement unfair |
Comedy legend John Cleese will have to pay £6,000 a year to his former wife following his divorce.
The Fawlty Towers and Monty Python star reached a £12 million settlement with psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger this week, which includes £8 million in cash and assets including property abroad.
However, the 70-year-old comic, who made his name in programmes such as The Frost Report, has described the settlement as unfair, as her children would get more money than his should they both die suddenly.
"At least I will know in future if I go out with a lady they will not be after me for my money," he commented.
The 70-year-old star, who has been married three times, met Ms Eichelberger in 1990 and the couple tied the knot two years later.
Commenting on the settlement, film director Michael Winner said it "defies human belief", as the money has come from Cleese's work and labour.
Neale Grearson, family Partner at Kester Cunningham John, had some sympathy for John Cleese.
He commented: "John Cleese's unhappiness at the outcome highlights the loss of control that a divorcing couple feel when the court is required to make a decision on a financial settlement.
"At a very emotional time this can be significant and why many couples are turning to Collaborative Law to deal with difficult issues on separation and divorce.
"In this the emphasis is on reaching agreement in a constructive and positive manner. John and his wife should have considered this as an option for them both.
"Also pre nuptial agreements are becoming more popular as the courts are increasingly accepting their value and enforceability. By this method a couple can take ultimate control of what happens financially if a divorce takes place."
