Bosses urged to manage causes of workplace stress
Businesses have been reminded that they have a duty of care to employees who are feeling stressed during the recession.

According to occupational health specialists at Aviva, many people are concerned about issues such as job security as a result of the current economic climate.

Consequently, it has reminded firms that if they fail to manage the mental health of their workforce, they could see lower productivity and a greater number of workplace accidents.

Furthermore, a personal injury suffered on work premises could also lead to compensation claims and expensive payouts for the employer.

Alex Marshall, business development manager at Aviva, commented: "There should be a strong focus on stress management, which should be treated like any other workplace hazard."

He added that forcing employers to work longer hours may also be detrimental, as this could affect performance and make them vulnerable to accidents.

According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive, 13.5 million days were lost because of work-related stress last year.
