FSB calls for simplification of employment law

Employment law needs to be simplified as it is stifling companies, according to the Federation of Small Businesses.

The body stated that sickness absence is a particularly difficult part of employment law and called on the coalition government to amend the current regulations.

National chairman of the organisation John Walker explained how smaller businesses often value the contribution made to the firm by employees more than bigger companies.

He said: "Research shows that staff in smaller firms are more often committed and loyal. But sickness absence is one of the most complex pieces of employment law they have to deal with."

Mr Walker called for the coalition government to provide a small employers relief for statutory sick pay in the same way that it does for maternity leave in order to give smaller companies the support they need.

Dianah Worman, diversity adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, recently warned firms they could face employment law tribunals if they do not treat older workers correctly.

Businesses looking for advice on changes to employment law can find help at Ashton KCJ.
