More than 500 prison officers in Northern Ireland have been offered redundancy packages from the government, which is attempting to modernise the service.

It is believed the move will cost as much as £60 million and 600 members of staff who are over the age of 60 are able to apply for the 520 places.

David Ford, justice minister, stated that reform of the sector is gathering pace in the coming months.

"The publication of this scheme underlines my commitment to fundamental transformation of the Northern Ireland Prison Service," he said.

A prison officer with 40 years of service to their name could be in line to receive as much as £120,000 under the redundancy package on offer.

Dr Paul Golby, chief executive of E.ON UK, recently announced that the energy company is seeking to cut around 500 positions through voluntary redundancy.

He admitted it will be a difficult time for members of staff at the firm.
