A fireman who was sacked after emailing his colleagues to ask about back pain has received a compensation payout for unfair dismissal.
Christopher Bennett, who had served with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for more than 25 years, began to suffer with back problems due to his arthritis after new chairs were brought in for crews to rest on.
Firefighters were told they had to use the recliners when they were on duty instead of beds.
Mr Bennett asked if he could go back to using a bed under the Disability Discrimination Act, but he was told he could not.
When he sent an email to his colleagues asking if they too were struggling with back pain, he was sacked for gross misconduct.
Mr Bennett decided to take legal action and am employment tribunal has now ruled that his human rights were breached and his dismissal was unfair.
As a result, he will receive compensation of
