TUC expects job losses to continue
Consumers in the UK have been warned that the number of redundancies could keep going up until late 2010.

The TUC believes that while economists are becoming increasingly optimistic about the country being over the worst of the recession, conditions in the employment market are still problematic.

As a result, it believes that the amount of people losing their jobs will continue rising until autumn 2010 at the earliest.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, commented: "It will be years before the thousands of people who have lost their jobs or who will lose them in months to come will see anything to celebrate."

He insisted that tackling unemployment must be the government's main priority.

Mr Barber called on it to speed up the process of getting people back into work and into jobs which offer good salaries.

This, he stated, would lead to greater consumer spending, which in turn would benefit the wider economy.

Meanwhile, the CBI has said it believes the UK economy is stabilising, but is unlikely to see a return to growth until next year at the earliest.
