Woman wins age discrimination case

A woman has won her age discrimination case, leading to damages of £25,000 being awarded.

Anna Stirrup brought about the legal action after being fired by Ufuoma Obahor's dry cleaners in Cookstown.

She had previously won £6,000 after hurtful comments from her boss about her age.

Mr Obahor then sacked her, leading to Ms Sturrup taking him to court over an age discrimination case.

"I have worked since I was 17 and this was the first time I had ever been even suspended. I found the entire experience very distressing," she said.

But Ms Stirrup argued it was not about the money, instead stating she was just glad it was now over.

This comes after firms were warned by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) that they could face employment law tribunals if they do not give adequate training to older members of staff.

Dianah Worman, diversity adviser at the CIPD, pointed out older workers could take action as a result of disputes over their capability.
