Selby District Council staff facing redundancy
Over 50 people at Selby District Council are facing the prospect of redundancy.

The authority claims government cuts mean it is being forced to reduce its staff numbers, with potential payouts totalling £800,000, Wetherby News reports.

A Selby District Council spokesman said: "As with all local authorities across the county, Selby District Council faces a near 30 per cent reduction in central government funding over four years."

So far, 48 employees have been made redundant, with a further 12-14 individuals likely to lose their positions. Of the redundancies, 34 were voluntary.

Councillor Donald MacKay told the newspaper that a new structure is being introduced at the council that means workers will now adopt a number of different roles.

He said everyone is "hoping" this model will succeed.

This is not the only local authority facing redundancies at present, as a number of positions at Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Redcar and Cleveland councils in the north-east are under threat, the Evening Gazette reported.
