North-east council workers 'face redundancy pay disparity'
Some public sector workers in the north-east may wish to seek legal advice over issues regarding redundancy.

The jobs of a number of employees at Middlesbrough, Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland councils are currently under threat, the Evening Gazette reports.

However, despite the fact they all perform the same duties, the individuals could receive different redundancy packages.

Although council workers are entitled to a statutory redundancy pay of 30 weeks' wage, local authorities can increase this if they desire.

While Middlesbrough Council's payments are at a 30-week maximum, staff at Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland may receive up to 66 weeks' pay.

However, this is under review in Stockton and a spokeswoman said: "Cabinet has agreed to start consultations with trade unions to reduce the multiplier with the aim of reducing costs."

This comes after the Somerset County Gazette reported that local council employees are working to rule over proposed redundancy payment cuts after voting in favour of industrial action.

Individuals who think they may have a claim under employment law can get advice from the team at Kester Cunningham John.ADNFCR-2347-ID-800608976-ADNFCR
