People with mental health issues 'are still facing stigma in the workplace' |
An expert in psychology has warned that people with mental health problems are facing discrimination in the workplace because of the stigma attached to their conditions.
Manchester-based psychologist Nick Adams said some employers may choose to recruit someone without a history of such issues over a person who documents them in their medical records because they are worried about the applicant taking sick leave often.
"Just because someone has a mental health problem it does not mean they are less effective in work," Mr Adams commented.
He warned that this negative attitude could put people off applying for positions if they have a history of depression.
According to the Direct Gov website, discriminating against a person because of their mental health could result in a breach of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Anyone affected may be able to take action at an employment law tribunal and should seek the advice of a solicitor in order to maximise the chances of their claim succeeding.
