Women 'are facing phenomenal gender inequality in business'

Women are still facing gender-based discrimination in the workplace, according to one expert.

Beverley Skeggs, professor at Goldsmiths University of London, said females in executive positions constantly come up against a glass ceiling which halts their progress when compared against their male counterparts.

"They are much less likely to get equivalent jobs, they are less likely to be promoted as quickly, so there is absolutely phenomenal gender inequality in our society that hasn't been addressed," she warned.

Ms Skeggs also said she believes that the problem is going to get much worse as a result of the current economic climate.

Indeed, according to the recent How Fair Is Britain? report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, progress on the gender pay gap in Britain appears to have halted.

Women aged 40 earn an average of 27 per cent less than men of the same age doing the same jobs.
