Engineer takes legal action after redundancy |
An engineer has alleged that he was unfairly selected for redundancy and racially abused on the internet.
Osama Abushenaf is claiming that he was the subject of various abusive comments on an online blog set up by his employer Schlumberger Global Resources.
The Libyan-born man believes attitudes towards his race, as demonstrated on the website, led to him being singled out for redundancy, BBC News reports.
If an employment tribunal rules in his favour, it could leave members of staff at other companies liable for comments they make online in future cases.
However, Schlumberger has said it should not be held accountable for statements that have been published on an external website.
"It is my belief that my race as portrayed in this website was a factor for me being given a poor grade and also for my ultimate selection for redundancy," Mr Abushenaf said.
This come after the Tribunals Service reported that the number of workers taking their employers to tribunals over redundancy issues has increased in the last year.
