Mergers and acquisitions expected to increase this year, company predicts

The number of mergers and acquisitions taking place this year is likely to be larger than that seen in 2010, one firm has said.

Paras Anand from European Assets Trust said he thinks there will be a spike in commercial activity due to current economic conditions and corporate goals.

"As businesses drive for scale and efficiency, they will look to acquire well-positioned businesses at good prices," he pointed out.

The expert added that this could be beneficial for investors in companies as well as those looking to buy a business.

This sentiment echoes that of UBS, which recently said it also expects mergers and acquisitions activity to increase significantly in 2011.

It said it had found that one in six European companies expects to make a large-scale acquisition at some point during the next 12 months.
