Older people who find themselves unemployed as a result of the economic downturn could consider buying a business and working for themselves.

Emma Soames, editor-at-large of Saga magazine, said that anyone in a field in which this is possible could find being self-employed beneficial in terms of the financial payoff.

"Self-employed people can go on working as long as they like," she pointed out.

The expert added that if people can see a gap in the market, they should "go for it and do it yourself", rather than attempting to get a salaried job working for someone else.

Earlier in 2010, David Yezbak, a business broker writing for the Augusta Chronicle, said buying a business could offer significant benefits over starting up a firm from scratch.

He explained that existing firms should already have their own client base, as well as having proven that they work in the current market.
