Farmers concerned about coastal access law |
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has called on Natural England to ensure that the needs of farmers are fully considered when the Marine and Coastal Access Bill becomes law.
Among the provisions included in the bill, which is expected to receive Royal Assent this week, is the creation of a continuous access route around the country's coastline, together with spreading room where deemed appropriate.
The NFU is among the groups which have been lobbying the government on behalf of those who would be affected by the change in law, requesting safeguards such as an objections procedure for landowners.
However, Meurig Raymond, deputy president of the union, is still not convinced the legislation is being introduced in a workable format and is seeking reassurance that farmers' needs will be taken into account when Natural England draws up its final plans for the route.
"It is imperative that Natural England engages in early negotiations which take into full consideration the land management and privacy needs of those directly affected by this new trail and its associated spreading room," said Mr Raymond.
He added that it is imperative that Natural England does everything it can to help farmers to protect their livelihoods.
