Changes to the Licensing Act for Royal Wedding celebrations

Author:
Amanda Timcke

Date: 23 March 2011

As the countdown to the Royal Wedding on 29 April begins, the Secretary of State has made an order to extend licensing hours.

According to Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 (“the 2003 Act”), extended licensing hours can be requested for events that are considered to be of exceptional national significance, which of course the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton is.

If enacted, the order will give licensed premises an additional two hours of trading for the sale or supply of alcohol on the premises from 29 April to 1 May. This would mean an extension of two hours starting at 11.00pm on 29 and 30 April. This would be the first ever relaxation period which falls under this legislative procedure.
